Rich was a professor in the Furniture Design and Woodworking Program at RIT’s School for American Crafts (SAC), leaving that position recently after teaching for 28 years. He is now Professor Emeritus in the College. Prior to his years at RIT Rich spent ten years as a full-time studio furniture maker. He continues to maintain an active studio, experimenting and producing work. Rich decided to leave RIT while he still loved teaching, in order to begin a "next phase" in his life.

Rich has exhibited his work extensively throughout his career and is represented in many well-known public and private collections. He has received numerous honors, including Individual Artists’ Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Arts Council and four from the New York Foundation for the Arts.
